From the recording Gypsy's Lament
For my Mum… an extraordinary woman! We had a conversation in my 20’s that totally debunked my perception that she had led a sheltered and naïve life. Motherless at age 3 she was shipped from pillar to post with various family members, boarding school, convent school. She (thankfully) decided that a life of celibacy in the novitiate was not for her and after teacher training in Adelaide braved the desert of Central Australia by herself where she taught for a year. She has more strength and has endured more hardship than I ever gave her credit for. She is one of the most remarkable and inspirational women I know and she's my Mum! Thank you Mum x
Lyrics
YOU’RE THE ONE
You’re not who I thought you were Mother
Not a sheltered and innocent child
You’ve had more than your share of misfortune to bear
From the dawn to the sweet by and by
Chorus
But you’re the strength of a mountain
The calm in the storm
You’re the magic of Dreamtime
The will to go on
You’re the one
You’re the warmth of the sun
You’ve borne heartache and pain like an angel
Known the loss of a motherless child
You keep faith through the dark times, believe in the now
Try to leave all your bygones behind
CHORUS
You’ve been right through the heart of this country
To the harshest extremes of this land
You went wide-eyed with wonder, from the veil to the wide-open spaces
The warm desert sand
CHORUS
For your love, your forgiveness, your patience
Your compassion, your touch and your smile
You give all that you’re able, your cards on the table
All my love I give you in kind
CHORUS
You’re my Mum!
